ABOUT "EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY'S TERROR BEHIND THE WALLS"

PA Haunted House HIGHLIGHTS: The massive Eastern State Penitentiary may be the best location in the United States for a haunted house. With massive walls, lined with towers and arrow-slit windows, this prison was built to intimidate. It was the most expensive building in the United States and the most famous prison in the world when it opened in 1829. It remained open for 142 years, housing some of America?s most notorious criminals. Al Capone and the flamboyant bank robber, ?Slick? Willie Sutton once called it home. http://www.terrorbehindthewalls.com The prison was abandoned in 1971, and stands today in a state of profound, eerie ruin. It?s been declared haunted by dozens of professional paranormal investigation teams, and featured Fox Television?s ?Scariest Places on Earth? and Sci-Fi channel?s ?Ghost Hunters.? http://www.terrorbehindthewalls.com Terror Behind the Walls, one of the nation?s largest and most ambitious haunted houses, takes over the cellblocks each fall. Over the past fifteen years it has grown to become one of the nation?s most recognized haunted attractions. It has been called ?perfect for Halloween? by the New York Times and ranked among the ?Top 10 Haunted House in the U.S.? by AOL City Guide, the Travel Channel and Hauntworld Magazine. The 2008 season (September 19th through November 2nd) of Terror Behind the Walls will feature five haunted attractions within the 11-acre Penitentiary complex, including Intake, which has been dramatically expanded for 2008. More Hype Than Horror
Terror Behind the Walls has the benefit of being able to build their haunt inside of the already creepy Eastern State Penitentiary- and that is both their greatest strength and greatest weakness. The team here relies so heavily on their location to build the scare for them and its obvious that the majority of the actors expect the location to do most of the work itself. If you think of this haunted attraction as nothing more than a fundraiser to help benefit the preservation of an historic landmark, than TBtW does its job well. It has a fantastic marketing team that draws in sell-out crowds each night, which means lots of profits for the museum, but also means steep ticket prices and large crowds for the attendees. The budget not being used for publicity goes towards lifeless props and the paychecks of local college theater students that would otherwise be out of work and are most likely only working there to pay rent, not because they have an appreciation for horror. I've been through this attraction 3 times within the last ten years and I can honestly say that I have been disappointed each time by extensive wait times, lackluster scares, and being cattle-herded through the attractions at the snails pace of the conga line of strangers crowded in front of you. If you want to visit Eastern State, do it during the day time tour when you can see more of the actual prison, learn something, and only pay a fraction of the cost.

Wasn't as scary as people made it out to be. Attractions were very short.
